Lufthansa reaches halfway point on the Transat
30/04/10
Twelve days since the start of the Transat, and three days since passing the gate in the Canary Islands and since the 25 boats began tackling the route west, across the Atlantic.
Lufthansa remains in the leading group, today in 8th position. A little over 1,800 miles (as the crow flies) separate Ronan Treussart and Yannick Le Clech from the finishing line in Saint Barthélémy, a vast distance that means today’s ranking can really only be considered provisional.
The crew was particularly motivated and revealed their strategy yesterday over the phone. The winds of 30 to 35 knots combined with an extremely uncomfortable sea have been replaced by flow that oscillates in strength and direction, making navigation a far more complicated affair. Given the anticipated, now palpable lull in the trade winds, this should all calm down and allow the sailors a little respite to once more stand up on the boats without risking any physical damage.
